For Heather Wood, living at the Branbury means being very careful…and never walking alone at night.

“My ward is really good about that, all the elders send around a list of people you can call if you need walking after dark, so I’ve got like a list of twenty guys that I can call on if I need to.” Wood says.

The neighborhood around Branbury has a history of sexual assualts; the latest one happened just last week. The Provo police have made suggestions to make this complex safer.

“Well, lower light and darker environments can raise crime, because it provides that oppourtunity and that ability, but increased lighting has been proven to deter it,” said officer Huntsman from the Provo Police department.

After an attack that happened along the provo river trail last summer the police cleared up the area making it more visible and relocated the homeless living there. Along with suggesting better lighting and fencing, police say they are thinking about cleaning out the area again. Students  like Wood say they hope that these changes will help them  feel a little bit safer about living at the Branbury.

“I’ve heard about, this has been going on for a long time, its no surprise, I feel like this should have happened a long time ago, but its good that its happening now,” said Wood.

Police say that the Branbury management are open and enthusiastic about the safety suggestions. They say they hope these improvments will be in place soon.
