What Color Do You Bleed?

What color do you bleed? The big rivalry games between BYU and the U might be over, but the battle between blue and red continues and the fight starts right at the vein.

Y-Serve, BYU’s Service Department,  along with the American Red Cross is hosting a “What Color Do You Bleed?” blood drive until the end of the week.  In past years, BYU would host a blood drive to build unity between the students leading up to the BYU vs. Utah football game.  Even though the Cougars battled the Utes earlier this season, BYU wanted to keep the tradition of building school spirit while serving the community this time of year.

“There’s no football game that will be happening this weekend in like past years.  So it’s purely to show your school pride and to be community minded,” said Brittany Herbert, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment representative.

Brian Story, a BYU law student and blood donor said, “I definitely want to support BYU and help other people.  It’s a good opportunity.”

However, school pride isn’t the only reason these Cougars give blood.  The need for blood donations in hospitals increases as people begin their holiday travel. During this time of year, more accidents happen so blood is in higher demand. But blood banks say they don’t get as many donors because people are busier.

“We definitely need blood all the time but especially now because you know we have so many injuries and things going on that we always need to have that supply of blood ready for us,” said Alie Jenkins, American Red Cross phlebotomist.

The American Red Cross says no matter where your true colors lie, every drop counts.  Red or blue.

The American Red Cross also set up a booth in the BYU Wilkinson Student Center where you can make Christmas cards for our troops if you are unable to donate blood.
