PROVO, Utah – Despite losing two top players to season-ending injuries, the Brigham Young University women’s tennis team is stepping up and planning to finish out the season strong.
The team suffered a blow when it lost senior Mayci Jones and freshman Polina Malykh to season-ending injuries.
“It’s hard when you lose some of your top players on your team,” said Head Coach Lauren Jones-Spencer.
Jones-Spencer said injuries can be just as difficult on the mind as they are on the body.
“You watch your teammates still playing and it’s difficult to see them competing and you can’t,” she said.
Mayci Jones said that sometimes it’s hard watching her teammates because she wants to be out on the court with them, but Jones and Malykh are determined to turn injury into impact.
“Standing outside and watching what’s going on helps a lot,” Malykh said.
Both athletes said they have the opportunity to learn as they watch their teammates practice and compete.
“That’s really fun to see the different aspect of the sport and how it’s different now that I can see the girls play,” said Mayci Jones, and Coach Jones-Spencer said she hopes they’ll use the time off the court to their advantage next year.
Jones and Malykh said they are grateful for all the support from their teammates and coaches.
“(We’re) looking to finish strong. Get into that conference tournament and just do our best,” Jones-Spencer said.
